4 Natural Ways to Transform Your Life Through Self-Awareness | Temple Gladstarr
When did you last give yourself permission to truly feel what your body has been carrying?
If you’re reading this while mentally running through your endless to-do list, wondering when you’ll ever have time for yourself – this message is especially for you! As we near the end of this summer season, I’d love to share these reflections and invite you to recognize and refine your own growth through kind attention, which is key to transformation!
Summer stretches its limbs to the tipping point. Tomato vines grow beyond their capacity to hold the weight of their own fruit. Roses too, extend their reach, sidewalk obstructed by blooms. Summer yields fullness and kind attention allows refinement to follow the revelry. Expansion and contraction are natural to all life, death, life cycles.
As we near the end of this summer season, I’d love to share these reflections and invite you to recognize and refine your own growth through kind attention – because awareness truly is the key to transformation.
1. Cultivate Gratitude for Simple Joys
Gratitude and humor are great doors to greater awareness! I am sitting in the garden now, honeysuckle tendrils tickling my neck, as I pause to reflect on the joys of this season. And what stands out most is being with my daughter, who discovered her tongue and so many new words at age one and a half!
What simple joys are you most grateful for? Sometimes when we’re constantly caring for others, we forget to notice the small moments that nourish our souls.
2. Find Healing Through Humor
Laughter lifts the corners of the mouth, eyes and heart! When I meet what might be difficult with humor it elevates my perspective and I am lifted into new possibilities and greater awareness. Not taking things personally, I can laugh at myself and soften any hard stance I may have on how things should be different. How has humor expanded your ability to be with what is, even when painful?
3. Create Space Through Sacred Silence
Silence allows space for awareness. This summer I experimented with pauses from screens. The silence was uncomfortable at times. It put me directly in touch with an underlying anxiousness, as well as patterns of thinking and being that were ready for transformation. The silence allowed me to be more fully present to feel the discomfort of what no longer serves me.
It also served as the sweetest backdrop to be with the chime of crickets, the buzz of bees, or my own breath, like waves, inhaling, exhaling. With the blessing of silence I was able to release a long attachment to a relationship that lived in fantasy. I also deleted an app from my phone that I recognized was draining my energy for embodied being. It’s not selfish, it’s essential. When have you chosen silence and space versus distraction? How has this refined your awareness of what you are ready to release?
4. Practice Compassionate Self-Awareness
Compassion: The most important way I’ve found to increase awareness and invite transformation naturally, is compassion. Compassion is loving awareness, and the ability to be with what is without pushing away or clinging. Compassion is simply being with, recognizing, allowing, softening, getting curious instead of critical about what is here now. Sensations, emotions, memories, stories, energy and where they live in the body. This summer I made space for regular compassionate check-ins with myself. I invited my body’s brilliance to guide the way and feel whatever wanted attention, pain, fear, guilt, joy, longing, shame, all without resistance.
Compassion opened my awareness in soft and natural ways and catalyzed transformation of the hardest and stickiest places inside of me. Old stories of not belonging and not worthy now have less strength. Ultimately, our capacity for awareness of both our internal and external landscapes refines and defines our experience. To be more fully alive and more fully free awareness is key! You deserve this care. When was the last time you spoke lovingly to your body and gave yourself permission to feel what it has been carrying?
