Trauma Informed Bodywork and Healing Childhood Trauma

As a healthcare practitioner and survivor of childhood trauma, I understand the profound impact that childhood trauma can have on an individual’s mental and physical well-being. If you’ve experienced abandonment, neglect, abuse, or violence during your formative years, it’s essential to acknowledge that these wounds may continue to influence your daily life, even if you’re not fully aware of their effects.

Common signs of an unhealed inner child include an overly sensitive nervous system, hypervigilance, dysregulated emotional outbursts under stress, avoidance behaviors, attention-seeking tendencies, low self-esteem, and difficulty forming healthy relationships. Traditional talk therapy, while valuable, may not always address the root of these issues, as trauma is often stored within the body itself.

Recent scientific research has highlighted the significance of positive human touch in regulating the nervous system and promoting healing. Through the release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, and the reduction of stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine, nurturing touch can help create a sense of safety – the foundation for healing.

When we feel safe, we can begin to explore and process the deeper wounds that we may have repressed. This sense of safety allows us to be vulnerable and fully experience the emotions we may have been holding onto for years. By accessing these feelings in a secure and supportive environment, we can start to reprogram our body’s response to stress and trauma.

As a trauma-informed massage therapist and bodyworker, I recognize the importance of creating a safe and loving space for individuals to relax and heal. By combining bodywork with energy work, we can provide new information to the body, bypassing old patterns and pathways. This information communicates to the inner child that they are safe, loved, and supported.

Each session of body-centered healing work helps to retrain old neuropathways, essentially reprogramming the body’s response to stress and trauma. With every experience of safety and love, new opportunities for healing and growth emerge.
